No output at all? - not even any error messages?

What's in the logs?

Weird!

What platform? What version of PostgreSQL and pg_dump?

Also, is there anything in the logs?

Spyros, please keep your replies on-list - it helps others to help you.

Has pg_dump ever worked for you? - or did it suddenly stop working one
day? If the latter, what changed around the time it stopped working?

Are you running pg_dump from the Linux VM, or from the XP host?

It's *really* bizarre that you get absolutely nothing.... does pg_dump
--help or pg_dump --version give you anything?

Note that 7.3 is *very* old; in fact, it is no longer supported by the
community, meaning that bug fixes are no longer back-ported to it -
that's been the case for a while now. You really should upgrade when you
can.
