Some one posted a simple command to start the postmaster. Unfortunately I lost it. I looked in the documentation that came with postgres but it is not there. Nor in the FAQ that comes with 7.2. They always seem to skip the simple stuff. The command is pg_ctl and it's called (at least within the Red Hat SysV init setup) from within /etc/rc.d/init.d/postgresql. If you run that command (or the SuSE, debian, etc. equivalane) with 'start', 'stop' or 'restart' you'll control the postmaster. Rich
