What would be a more friendly blocking message would be an invitation to be on the white list. I've seen a very slowly increasing trend for that. If they can automate being added, even better! :-) Personally, I block with bl.spamcop.net, so it's dynamic based on who is sending spam "right now" (or in the last 48 hours).... wanadoo IP's show up all the time, but it's not a network-wide-block. <soapbox> Or, even better: get an ISP who's not spam-friendly? I say stop using blacklists and start using bayesian spam classifiers (recent SpamAssasin for example). It's more costly because you have to filter mail coming from known spammers, but you get much less false positives. You also have to train it. I actually filter all my pgsql lists, plus some spanish lists, through one we made, and get 5-6 false negatives a day (spam as non-spam), and 3-4 false positives a week (non-spam as spam). 30-40 spam messages are correctly detected daily. I dunno how much "real" email, but around 100 or 120 I think. We run spamassassin 2.52 on all our servers, and I know that when I get it re-enabled on teh pgsql-* lists, the amount of spam that got into the moderators queue drop'd considerably .... I find the spam is from their "abo" PTR sub/domains so block by MTA IP with PTR domain (and child domains) of abo.wanadoo.fr. "abo" = abonne = subscriber = dialup + DSL ... leaving, eg, smtp.wanadoo.fr, their SMTP servers, acceptable. Can I white-list only > your username? There was a DNS problem or your filter is very good. The mail was sent by mail.tgds.net - the machine connected to mail.tgds.net is on a Wanadoo aDSL account. Some of us don't have the luxury of choosing their ISP. I have just signed with 9telecom and am waiting (like thousands of others) to have my account activated. They are 15 EUR/$ cheaper per month and they will soon be offering 1024 Mb aDSL for less that the 512 Mb I have now. You can bet that at that price you will soon be blocking spam from their domaine as well as Wanadoo... My company is an ISP and over the next couple of month we're going to be testing some satellite based IP services (including internet and VPNs). If you (or anyone else) is interested I can add you to our list of interest parties. The service we're going to roll out is going to be geared more to businesses and "power users" so I'm going to try and make it as flexible as possible while maintaining the strict security environment we have now. I personally think the approach of blocking entire ISP is stupid. I've been unable to send Tom mail for quite some time (and others on this list) because all of XO.com is block. We have a rack in their chicago datacenters with all our own equipment that's managed by us. With all the spam being sent from everywhere, i'm amazed people who take this approach don't just block 100% of their mail from everwhere and never get another email. This idea of good / bad ISP is a little misquided when you come down to the practicality of things. Mainly from companies such as rackspace, verio, eli, level3, charter.. sigh one could go on. So moving to a colo in Panama would be an improvement over rackspew. :-)
