Not that I'm questioning your wisdom Bruce :-) but I got the impression that
most people who commented on this issue thought that removal of the code was
the better option to keep things tidy. Did I miss something?

Yes, most agreed, but because we are in beta, and because there is no
official ODBC maintainer to make the decision, we will leave it in for
7.1.  I can remove it during 7.2 development cycle if people still agree
it should be removed.

[ Actually, it was not my wisdom.  I was overruled. ]
