Thanks for the report. I am able to reproduce the crash in HEAD.

when the data is NULL, there is no data to populate and the tupleDesc is not updated.
Accessing of NULL pointer leads to crash. Attached quick simple patch fixes the problem.

Yes, that's an oversight in 4984784f836 (from Tom) which fixed a
_different_ crash here.

return a valid tupdesc.  Without that you get "set-valued function called
in context that cannot accept a set" errors.  I think the right fix is
to force a call of update_cached_tupdesc so that there always is a
tupdesc to copy.
